Current Professional Activities
Dr. Guidotti is currently an international consultant in the fields of occupational and environmental medicine, risk management, and sustainability. His work involves 1) problem solving involving consulting, advising, and special projects, 2) medical evaluation, including consultation and disability evaluation, 3) medicolegal services (including expert witness), 4) publishing, editing, and writing. Although retired from the George Washington University, Dr. Guidotti remains active in teaching and research, holds adjunct faculty appointments at West Virginia University and the University of Alberta, and is a frequent visiting faculty and guest lecturer at academic institutions. His particular interests include energy technologies, the occupational health of firefighters, adaptation to climate change, and science policy (both “science for policy” and “policy for science”) and governance.
Professional Experience
Tee L. Guidotti is a consultant in occupational and environmental health and medicine, working privately, doing business as Occupational + Environmental Health & Medicine. He retired as Professor and Chair of the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health in the School of Public Health and Health Services, The George Washington University Medical Center, Washington DC, and Director of the Division of Occupational Medicine and Toxicology in the Department of Medicine, School of Medicine and Health Sciences. Prior to taking that position in 1999, he was for 14 years Professor of Occupational and Environmental Medicine and Director of the Occupational Health Program in the Department of Public Health Sciences at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada.
He obtained his MD at the University of California at San Diego and completed all his training at Johns Hopkins in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine and occupational and environmental medicine, obtaining board certification in each, and has additional non-medical credentials in toxicology and environmental management. He received his postdoctoral research training at the National Institutes of Health.
He is best known in occupational medicine for his expertise on the occupational health problems of firefighters and oil and gas workers. He is the author of over 300 papers and book chapters and has produced eight books. He was a Fulbright Visiting Chair at the Institute for Science, Society, and Policy at the University of Ottawa in 2015. Dr. Guidotti has served as President of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM) and the Association of Occupational and Environmental Clinics, and Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Honor Society.
In 2013, he was recognized by ACOEM with the Knudsen Award for Lifetime Achievement in Occupational and Environmental Medicine. He has received numerous meritorious achievement awards, professional awards, and fellowships, most of them international. Much of Dr. Guidotti’s current work relates to environmental sustainability and health.
His areas of academic interest include occupational lung disease, energy-related occupations, the occupational health problems of firefighters, air quality, children’s environmental health, environmental sustainability, and global occupational and environmental health.
Academia, Publishing, Awards
Dr. Guidotti has published 62 original (data-driven) research papers, about 250 full-length review papers, book chapters, case studies, clinical guidelines, and policy-oriented reports, and has produced (edited or written in full) eight books, several of which have gone into multiple editions. He has also written countless editorials, short pieces, and commentaries on professional topics, many of them appearing in Archives of Environmental and Occupational Health, the journal he edited for many years.
