Areas of expertise include non-biological hazards often associated with occupational health and safety issues, as well as emergency preparedness activities focusing on natural disaster, disease epidemic, or malicious acts.

RSI has developed decision-support tools designed to enhance emergency preparedness activities.

Examples of work in this area include:

  • a detailed analyses of the healthcare needs of a large U.S. state in response to a pandemic of H1N1 influenza;
  • a model to explore the public health response under a malicious act on the food supply;
  • a web-based tool to explore the health care response and surge capacity needs, as well as the impact of any food-source, attack agent, or geographic target; and
  • a web-based tool for food producers to explore vulnerability and maintenance of a food supply resilient to attack.
